  • The intersection of STEAM and social justice is where young people can make societal breakthroughs that will positively impact the future of communities across the world. On behalf of the Aspen Institute Science & Society Program, we are excited to share that we are accepting applications for the 2023 Our Future is Science (OFIS) Mentorship Program. OFIS is a virtual program that connects high-schoolers with STEAM graduate students to explore science and social justice intersections. An honorarium is provided to both mentees ($1,000) and mentors ($1,500). Learn more and apply here.

  • Hidden Wonders of the Deep, Science Without Borders Challenge, Student Art Contest, www.lof.orgWe are thrilled to announce that the 2024 Science Without Borders© Challenge is now open! The theme for this year’s Challenge is “Hidden Wonders of the Deep.” Our international art contest invites students worldwide to showcase their creativity by depicting the mysterious and unique creatures or ecosystems found in the deep sea. Through their artwork, students will have the opportunity to highlight the beauty and diversity that often goes unnoticed in these fascinating underwater worlds. Learn about the theme.

    The Science Without Borders© Challenge is open to all students worldwide who are 11-19 years old and enrolled in primary or secondary school (or the home-school equivalent). College and university students are not eligible for this contest. Work will be judged in two categories based on age, with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes awarded for each:

    • Students 11-14 years old
    • Students 15-19 years old

    Students can win up to $500 in this international art contest. 

    All entries must be received by Monday, March 4, 2024, to be eligible to win the contest.

    Create new solutions for space

    The U.S. Department of Education invites high schools to submit designs for a product or service that will contribute to space missions and exploration.

  • Every year, high school seniors eagerly await this once-in-a-lifetime chance to submit their research to the Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS), the nation’s oldest student STEM competition. Your students could be named scientific leaders of the future – and win scholarships up to $250,000.

    The online application consists of an original research paper, essays, written recommendations from teachers and mentors, and more. Tell your students to visit our website for more information and to sign up for program updates and events. The application closes November 8.

  • About the Dellums SMART Scholarship

    The Department of Defense (DoD) is the largest employer of STEM professionals in the federal government, with nearly 300,000 civilian scientists and engineers. The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program is a combined educational and workforce development opportunity for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students funded by the DoD.In 2023, the SMART Program expanded the scholarship program eligibility by introducing the Ronald V. Dellums Memorial SMART Scholarship (Dellums SMART Scholarship). To honor the lifetime work of Representative Dellums, Congress established the Ronald V. Dellums Memorial SMART Scholarship, with the goal to increase participation of underrepresented students in the DoD STEM workforce. This opportunity expands the SMART scholarship opportunity to rising college freshmen who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree in one of the 24 SMART STEM disciplines. High school seniors are eligible to apply for the Dellums SMART Scholarship.

    Students seeking to attend a Historically Black College and University, Minority Institution, or Minority Serving Institution are particularly encouraged to apply. The Dellums SMART Scholarship is open to all applicants who meet the eligibility requirements.

    The application is open annually from August 1 to December 1.

    The International Ocean Film Foundation (IOFF) is best known for producing the International Ocean Film Festival, now in its 21st year and is considered the largest ocean themed film festival in the world.

    Our vision is a world with healthy and productive oceans for the benefit of all and our mission is to be the premier global platform for ocean literacy and education through independent film.

    Since its inception in 2004, the IOFF festival hosts independent, ocean-themed films from around the globe.  As a visual communication platform for ocean science and contemporary ocean issues, the IOFF offers year-round educational and community engagement opportunities for audiences of all ages.

    The film festival considers films of all genres which focus on the many varied aspects of our big, blue ocean. Award categories include Animation, Conservation, Coastal and Island Cultures, Director, DEI, Environment, Female Filmmaker, Golden Gate (recognition of a local Bay Area filmmaker) Innovation, Marine Science/Wildlife, Ocean Sports and Exploration, and Short.
